Tivoli Gardens, located in the heart of Copenhagen, is a magical attraction where culture meets fun. Since opening in 1843, this historic amusement park has drawn millions with its beautiful gardens, exciting rides, and lively shows. Whether you're visiting with family, friends, or solo, Tivoli offers an unforgettable experience. Here are some tips to help you discover the hidden gems of this beloved spot.

Plan Your Visit Ahead of Time

Planning is key for a smooth visit to Tivoli Gardens. The park's opening hours change throughout the year, especially during peak seasons like summer and during special celebrations like Halloween and Christmas. For example, during the summer months, the garden often opens at 11 a.m. and closes around midnight.

Make sure to visit the official website. It provides current information on events, ticket prices, and operating hours. By checking ahead, you can dodge long lines and maximize your time in the park. I would advise booking your park tickets in advance, if on the day you decide to add on ride tickets you can do this within the app or from the ticket machines within the gardens.

Arrive Early or Late

To truly embrace Tivoli’s charm, consider arriving early in the morning or later in the evening. Morning visits provide a serene atmosphere, ideal for leisurely strolls through blooming flowers and tree-lined paths before the crowds arrive. Early risers can take in the beauty at their own pace and snap stunning photos with fewer people around.

On the other hand, visiting in the evening allows you to experience the garden transformed by magical light displays. The gardens illuminate with over a million lights during the Christmas season, creating a breathtaking sight.

On my recent visit in December 2024, we arrived around 1pm and it was very quiet, but come 5/6pm it was a lot busier. Tivoli really comes alive int he evening so I would advise you to experience it both in the day and at right, plan to spend 4-6 hours+ there

Explore Beyond the Rides

While Tivoli is famous for its thrilling rides like the wooden roller coaster Rutschebanen, there's a wealth of experiences beyond the attractions. Test your senses as you stroll through various themed areas, each with distinct character.

Don’t skip the serene gardens filled with seasonal floral exhibitions. Seek out live performances, as the park often features musicians, dancers, and cultural shows. For instance, traditional Danish folk performances and open-air concerts can elevate your visit, giving you a taste of local culture.

Try the Local Cuisine

No visit to Tivoli would be complete without tasting its delicious food. The park offers a mix of dining experiences, from casual eateries to fine restaurants. Be sure to try Cheesydreams, which had the most delicious cheese.

Don’t miss out on classic sweet treats like Danish pastries or cotton candy. If you are looking for a sit down meal in the evening, I would advise making a booking ahead of the day as many places were fully booked.

Make Use of the Tivoli App

The Tivoli Gardens app can be a game changer, it provides real-time updates on ride wait times, show schedules, and interactive maps of the park. Use it to create a personalised itinerary for your day.

It will also inform you of when rides are open as not all rides open all day.

You can also access your ride photos from within the app, which are free to download.

Attend Special Events

Tivoli regularly hosts seasonal celebrations like the Halloween festival, where the park is adorned with spooky decorations, or the Christmas market filled with festive cheer, are particularly popular. Be sure to check the official event calendar for your visit. Engaging in these special events can enhance your Tivoli experience and immerse you in Danish culture.
